Agnès Varda
Agnes Varda is a French film director who was part of the French New Wave. She was awarded an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2017 and an honorary Cesar in 2001. She received a Golden Lion for “Vagabond” (1985) at the Venice Film Festival. In recent years, she has abandoned features for documentary essays, poetic in form and universal in meaning.

Famous French film director Agnès Varda and a well-known photographer and muralist, known only by his initials JR. They share a common passion for images – questioning the way they are shown, in particular. Varda chose cinema, JR chose to create open-air photographic galleries. When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to shoot a film in France, away from big cities. This is how their documentary road movie came to be – a portrait of slowly fading French villages and their inhabitants.
